OUR STORY
Founder, Sharon Daugherty
Raised in Fort Lauderdale, FL since 1962, Ms. Daugherty is the second of three children from a working class family. Throughout her childhood, Ms. Daugherty was the "star" student, publicly succeeding in the community and school activities. Privately, she lived a life of fear and shame as a victim of childhood sexual abuse. Her world crashed at age 16 when she ran away from home. During this time Ms. Daugherty struggled with the dissonance between the reality of her life and her dreams and aspirations. She began her pursuit of a better life by enrolling in Community College, continuing on to Florida Atlantic University and attaining her Bachelor of Arts Degree. By then she knew her destiny was to help others heal and recover from trauma. Ms. Daughtery went on to Florida State University where she achieved her Masters Degree in Counseling and Human Services.
Returning to her hometown after college, she founded Innermotion, an adult incest survivor dance theater company which enabled her to use the expressive arts to reflect growing levels of healing. Through Innermotion Ms. Daugherty has touched thousands of survivors and has taught this healing magic to individuals, groups, and therapeutic and ciminal justice professionals.
In addition to performances and public speaking, because of theater audience demand, Innermotion offers workshops in which participants work intensively on their issues and concerns:
Founded in 1990, Innermotion was Sharon Daugherty's gift to the survivor community. Ms. Daugherty, a survivor of childhood sexual violence, a therapist, and a dancer, was inspired to share her recovery using experiential movement.
So, Innermotion began as a dance theatre company, comprised of men and women who were abused as children. These volunteers were drawn from a diversity of backgrounds and displayed a variety of talents. Recognized nationally, they continue to perform throughout the United States.
Each performance is unique in its depiction of the individual celebration and expression of triumph of the human spirit.
Through use of interpretive movement and expressive dance, they portray a fascinating life journey. Out of surviving violence, they have created several moving presentations, each with a distinct theme, but also with a universal message of hope, empowerment and joy.
